Info

  • Presenting Group: Group 3
  • Presentation Topic: Defending Against Advanced Persistent Threats

Learning and Engagement

  • I learned that in 2009 Google suffered a major data incident involving a zero day in Internet Explorer, likely from Chinese state actors.
  • I learned that it was sent to a Google employee in Beijing with the text “Go Kill Yourself”, and afterwards Google publicly disclosed the incident and stopped censoring google.cn and instead redirected them to the Hong Kong google.

Presentation Evaluation

Content Clarity

  • Rating: 4

Comments

  • The presentation was pretty short, but I think that was beneficial since it didn’t pad the content too much with unnecessary information. I think it was short and sweet.

Engagement

  • Rating: 4

Comments

  • I think the debate was pretty engaging, it was fun to argue even if I don’t agree with that position. However, I think that us having to read a chapter ourselves wasn’t too engaging.

Depth

  • Rating: 4

Comments

  • The presentation was okay, it just didn’t go into too into depth. I think it was good that it didn’t know, since it could’ve been a lot of unnecessary information.
  • For the stuff that was important, it went into good depth though.

Constructive Feedback

Worked Well

  • I think that the debate worked well, I really enjoyed that we got to switch our positions so that we didn’t have to argue on the side we don’t agree with for both of the questions.

Improvements

  • I think that the reading on our own part of the presentation wasn’t as great, but I understand why they have it. Instead, maybe it could be more engaging somehow.

Reflection

Real Security Role

  • I think that in a real security role, it would be important to not click links. However, some zero days are unavoidable, so I think it’s just good to make sure your security systems are hardened so attackers that get in aren’t able to do anything.

Something to Remember

  • I think that it was funny to me that the Google employee in Beijing clicked a link that said “Go Kill Yourself”, and it was one of the most sophisticated attacks Google had dealt with.
